Mario Kart Switch revealed for Nintendo Switch
Mario Kart Switch is one of the few games that were revealed in the Nintendo Switch official trailer. While the gameplay shown in the trailer is limited, it does appear to contain some new interesting elements. Keep in mind, aside from the trailer, no official announcement has been made regarding release date, or features. Although I am sure all of us are hoping to get our hands on this title on the Nintendo Switch launch day. Let’s take a look at what features can be observed through the trailer.
Double Item Slots:
One of the new gameplay elements shown in the trailer shows a primary, and a secondary item slot for characters. This concept was last seen in one of the best Mario Kart games to date, Mario Kart: Double Dash, on the Gamecube. Unlike Mario Kart: Double Dash, It appears Mario Kart Switch only lets you play as one character rather than having two characters sharing one kart. The trailer did not reveal if Mario Kart Switch would also be re-introducing “double” item boxes, which allows racers to snag two items at a time, but I sure hope they are back. Only time will tell as we probably will not have any further information on Mario Kart Switch until January. Although, it appears they are taking Mario Kart Switch back in the right direction by bringing back two inventory slots.
The map shown during the trailer is Yoshi Circuit, a fan favorite map from Mario Kart: Double Dash. This map was also featured as DLC on Mario Kart 8, for the Wii U. It is hard to say for sure from the quick trailer, but it appears the map has been given a brush up. It is only speculation at this point, but we can all assume Mario Kart Switch will feature many older Mario Kart race tracks, as seen in previous Mario Kart installments.
The main characters shown in the trailer are Mario, and King Boo. King Boo was not a playable character in Mario Kart 8, so it is great to see him back in action. Just when King Boo thought he could retire in peace, Mario Kart Switch pulled him back in. No other characters have been revealed yet, besides these two. However, if you look closely at the image above, you can see from the map an icon with Baby Mario’s face. Below Baby Mario’s icon, it appears to be Roy who was a playable character in Mario Kart 8. Toad can also be seen above baby Mario’s icon. Considering it appears Roy will be featured in Mario Kart Switch, I would expect all of the koopa kids to return as well.
What’s a Mario game without coins? A concept being revisited from Mario Kart 7, and 8 are the lovely iconic gold coins. Assuming they are used similarly to previous Mario Kart titles, coins will be used to unlock new karts and characters in Mario Kart Switch. It has not been confirmed yet if the coins will be used as they were in previous titles, but one can assume they will be used as some form as currency.
Mario Kart 7 introduced the ability to drive while underwater, and to glide. Mario Kart 8 introduced the ability to spin off of players for a speed boost, and racing on walls. In the trailer, it appears the ability to spin off of other players will be returning, however no other features were shown. One can assume Mario Kart Switch will likely introduce another new gimmick/feature to the series in order to stand out from the crowd.
Currently, this is all we can confirm about Mario Kart Switch, and we will be sure to update our followers as soon as we hear more information. Keep up with the Nintendo Switch Network by following us on Twitter.
